(102) Allen families of Pembrokeshire

Allen of Cresselly
This rather complicated post tells the story of the Allen families of Pembrokeshire, who between them formed one of the dominant gentry families in the county over three centuries. There are four main branches of the family, but because of the intermarriage and transfers of property between them it seems best to make their story one post.  The Allens of Gelliswick and later of Rickeston represent the senior line; the Allens of Cresselly the wealthiest and most tenacious line (they are still at Cresselly), and arguably the only branch of the family to own a real country house; while the Allens of Bicton and Cilrhiw are cadet branches which remained prominent in the county over several generations and produced numbers of prominent churchmen and colonial administrations, a tradition continuing until the death of Sir Roger Allen in 1972.

According to family legend the Allens came originally from northern Ireland, and arrived in the early 17th century when one Thomas Allen was literally washed up in Pembrokeshire after a shipwreck, but in reality the Allen name was well established in the county by late medieval times.  This family first appear in identifiable form in the historical record in the mid 17th century, when William Allen (1624-88) took on the lease of Gelliswick.  The family were primarily farmers, and although they also accumulated freehold property, they remained tenants at Gelliswick until 1808, by which time they had acquired the freehold of Rickeston (sold in the mid 20th century).  William Allen (1658-1722) married the heiress of the Dale Castle estate, but Dale was left to a younger son and was carried out of the family by his only daughter, so the account of Dale Castle is reserved to a future post on the Lloyd-Philipps family of Dale Castle.

A grandson of William Allen (1658-1722), John Allen (d. 1752), of Goodhooke, married Joan, daughter and heiress of John Bartlett of Cresselly in 1728. The Bartlett family had lived at Cresselly since 1564. Their son and heir was John Bartlett Allen (1733-1803) who acquired Panteg (alias Panteague), Llanddewi Velfrey, Pembrokeshire, following his marriage to Elizabeth, only daughter and heiress of John Hensleigh of Panteg (the Hensleighs had been at Panteg since 1619). John and Elizabeth were succeeded by their eldest son, John Hensleigh Allen (1769-1843), a barrister and MP for Pembroke Boroughs 1819-1826, who married Catherine Phillips. According to the 1873 return of owners of land, the estate measured 4,655 acres in Pembrokeshire, Glamorganshire and Carmarthenshire, and carried an annual rent of £4,091.  The Cresselly estate descended directly in the male line until Henry Seymour Allen (1847-1928), who died unmarried. The estate then passed to his nephew, Hugh Evelyn Allen (1880-1933). His heir was his only daughter, Auriol Joan Bartlett Harrison-Allen, later Evans, whose son, Hugh Harrison-Allen, is the present owner.

Lancelot Bough Allen (1774-1845), second son of John Bartlett Allen of Cresselly, built Cilrhiw, Lampeter Velfrey, Pembrokeshire, in about 1826. The estate, which also included land in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, passed to Lancelot's son, George Bough Allen (1821-1898), whose daughter by his first marriage, Rachel Mary Allen, died unmarried in 1949. The estate then passed to her cousin, Bertram Wedgewood Allen, but it appears to have been sold after his death in 1955.

The Bicton estate was part of the property of the Allens of Gelliswick from 1694 but in the early 19th century passed to Joshua Jullian Allen (1799-1885), a solicitor, and it remained the property of a cadet branch of the family until the mid 20th century.  The farm would seem to have been continuously tenanted, however, and in 1936 passed into the ownership of a branch of the family settled in Tenby, where Charles Allen (1808-84) had built a Victorian Gothic town house to the design of Ewan Christian in the 1860s.

Gelliswick House, Pembrokeshire

An L-shaped house consisting of a tall five bay single-pile block with a rear staircase projection of c.1725, of three full storeys above the cellars, and an earlier five bay Elizabethan house retained as a service wing.  The Elizabethan house was assessed at five hearths for the Hearth Tax in 1670, so was already a fairly large house by local standards. The house survived until 1980, when it was demolished by Esso Petroleum, as they 'had no further use for it'.

Descent: William Barrett (fl. mid 15th cent.); to son, David Barrett; to son, Owen Barrett; to son, Gelly Barrett (d. c.1580); to son, John Barrett (d. c.1617); to grandson, Henry Bowen, who sold before c.1650 to Morris Canon (d. 1658)...John Canon (d. 1690); to daughter Elizabeth, wife of Sir Erasmus Philipps, 3rd bt., of Picton Castle, with which estate it subsequently descended until 1944 when sold to W.J. Cowie of Cardiff; to brother, D.K. Cowie, who sold 1955 to Esso Oil Co., which demolished the house in 1980. The house was let to William Allen (1624-88); to son, William Allen (1658-1722); to son, William Allen (c.1678-1744); to son, Joseph Allen (1726-98); to son, John Allen (1752-1808), and later to Thomas Philipps (b. 1776), Henry Palmer (d. 1849), James Greenish (d. 1867), to son, James Greenish (d. 1899), to son Robert Picton Greenish; John and Cordelia Belton (fl. 1910-44).

A gentleman farmer's house, altered or rebuilt in the late 18th century. It now stands close to one of the big oil refineries at Milford Haven.

Cresselly House, Pembrokeshire

A severe five bay three storey stone villa, built in 1769-71 for John Bartlett Allen.  The architect is unknown but could be William Thomas of London, who was a protégé of Lord Cawdor. The central three bays break forward slightly and there are recessed lower windows in the outer bays within simple blind arches; the absence of a pediment leads to a lack of adequate central emphasis.  The garden front is dominated by a broad, full-height canted bay, and the outer bays have Venetian windows on the ground floor, again set within blind arches.  As originally built, the house had single-storey pavilions, but these were rebuilt in 1869 as slightly recessed two storey, three-bay wings with single-storey canted bays on the garden side to echo the central block. The work of 1869 was designed by Clark & Holland of Portsmouth, who were estate architects to the owner's father-in-law, Lord Portsmouth.

Alterations to the central block in 1815-16 by William Hoare of Lawrenny make it difficult to reconstruct the original plan. The staircase may have risen from the central three-bay hall, which was made smaller in 1816 by the extension of the dining room into its left side.  The present top-lit staircase is in a square well to the right of the hall, and has a wrought-iron balustrade made by William Moss of Carmarthen.  The original drawing room is in the centre of the garden front, behind the central bay, and it preserves a delicate Rococo decorative ceiling of 1771 - perhaps the work of a Bristol stuccadore - but the Adamesque silk wall panels are Edwardian.  The room to the west was fitted out as a library in 1816, and has a plaster floral swag over the fireplace; the room to the east is a small panelled study.  The extensions of 1869 provided a new drawing room and billiard room at the west end of the house, and service rooms in the east wing.  A new secondary staircase was formed as part of the works, which incorporates part of a Chinese Chippendale balustrade of 1769. For views of the interiors see here.

The house stands right beside a main road, but as part of the 1869 works, Clark & Holland laid out a series of approach drives to the house, with gates and lodges, from the four points of the compass, which were intended to give the house the feel of a parkland setting.

Descent: John Bartlett; to daughter, Joan, wife of John Allen (1695-1752); to son, John Bartlett Allen (1733-1803); to son, John Hensleigh Allen (1769-1843); to son, Seymour Phillips Allen (1814-61); to son, Henry Seymour Allen (1847-1928); to nephew, Hugh Evelyn Allen (1880-1933); to daughter, Auriol Joan Bartlett Allen (1921-92), wife of Maj. David Harrison-Allen (1907-76) and later Brian Evans; to son, Hugh David Rowland Harrison-Allen (b. 1950).

Cilrhiw, Lampeter Velfrey, Pembrokeshire

A small stuccoed and hipped-roofed L-shaped house, built about 1826 for Lancelot Baugh Allen.  A square block was added to the broad side of the house in about 1850.

Descent: Lancelot Baugh Allen (1774-1845); to son, George Baugh Allen (1821-98); to son, Wilfrid Baugh Allen (1849-1922); to sister, Rachel Mary Allen (1862-1949); to cousin, Bertram Wedgwood Allen (c.1889-1955). The house was sold in 1988 and 1994.

Bicton House, St. Ishmaels, Pembrokeshire

A farm between St. Ishmaels village and Sandy Haven, west of Milford Haven. The house was part of the estate of the Allens of Gelliswick from 1694, but in the 19th century became the home of a cadet branch of the family.

Descent: Joshua Allen (1741-1804); to son, Rev. David Bird Allen (1769-1831); to son, Joshua Jullian Allen (1799-1885); to grandson, William Bird Allen (1851-1936); to second cousin, Herbert Charles Goodeve Allen (1878-)

  1. I am a direct descendant of Henry Palmer (died 1849) tenant of Gelliswick House. He was a Captain in the West India Regiment then a sea captain. His son David Palmer appears in the 1851 census as the tenant farmer of 266 acres. By 1853 he migrated to Australia to be a Sergeant of Mounted Police and then a landowner in the Riverina area of NSW. His son Henry was my great grandfather. I am John Palmer.
