My Atkinson branch was from offaly, Cangort ,but my last ancestor who lived there was Rev Guy Atkinson DD. his 3rd son Capt.Edward (Guy ),who did not inherit was born @1766 and came to America late 1700s . this info was given by ulster scots historical society in 1960s to my grandma Mabel Atkinson also verified with family bible records of John Paxton Atkinson my great great grandpa. Edward married 1795 to Jessey Paxton in NYC. they had numerous children all except 1 boy and 1 girl lived to adults.Edward listed as shipmaster in NYC directory from 1794.he died in gunboat Naval battle explosion in 1810 ,was lost at sea in chesapeake bay .His widow Jessey ran a boarding house in manhatten and owned 5 houses , pieces of property there on Chambers st. and chapel st( now west broadway, )one on long term lease to the trinity church. only their son John Paxton Atkinson had 4 sons and 1 daughter. He was a very successful business man in the Tea & Import buss. With Hoffman & Co. He was on the Brooklyn Bridge planning committee and started the NYC fire Dept. He relocated his family to the new Brooklyn Heights area.Im descended fom his son Edward Spear Atkinson who was a union capt in civil war ,but later married a Texas girl . Now he is the only Yankee civil war officer buried in the confederate cemetary in Alvin Texas . His family was also cousins of the Crowhill Atkinsons as he went there many times to visit . last time any of us went was 1914 to crow hill was when my great uncle hoffmans sons guy and Geoffrey went as to visit . My great grandpa Edward died in 1916 . and the old Mr Joseph Atkinson at crow hill died about the same time..Most of my cousins all live in texas still. We dont know why Edward Left Ireland ,maybe he did get into trouble?maybe he even had another wife and child? there are no explanations we can find.thanks, Leah Atkinson DoyleLeah A.Doylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02414574157923791256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-704095971276575721.post-34967436828523352402024-03-20T06:58:44.299+00:002024-03-20T06:58:44.299+00:00Hopefully I have the right one for you .Donald Bai...Hopefully I have the right one for you .Donald Baikie born 1868 -1919 married (Elizabeth Campbell 1867-1949 ) in 1890.Donald died early and Elizabeth and her family emigrated to new zealand living in masterton.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-704095971276575721.post-85361391704415434982024-03-19T10:53:35.554+00:002024-03-19T10:53:35.554+00:00There was still a Lady Bellingham at Castlebelling...There was still a Lady Bellingham at Castlebellingham in 1937 - my parents met her. I was told by a man in Ireland who owned a heraldry shop that this Atkinson got crosswise of the Irish folk for assisting the English against them. When they came to the colonies some kept the original spelling while my branch was changed to Atkeson. Many of the given kin names were the same as those from England. Indeed I had the "privilege" of being a pall bearer st his funeral ! He was a charming & interesting man. I am researching the Township of Moston in Cheshire (about 10 miles from Crangage) in which was (about 50%) owned by John Armitstead and then on death passed to his son Lawrence who sold it in 1825. I read on these pages that there exists a 3/4 length painting of Lawrence Amitstead (1790-1874) in the possession (t the time) of Lt Col Bobby Armitstead. Do you know where this painting is now as it would really add to my research.
